In addition to the ongoing Felon: An American Washi Tale theater piece, renowed visual artist Kyoko Ibe and OWAADao Alumni Elise Thoron (OWAADao 2008, 2010) will be holding an artists' conversation on the launch of their new book The Way of Washi Tales which documents the decade-long cross-cultural exchange and perfomances that OWAADao has initiated with Thoron's fellowship and includes work of several other OWAADao Alumni: Karen Kandel (OWAADao 2006), Sonoko Soeda (OWAADao 2008, 2009), Shonosuke Okura (OWAADao 2000), and Makiko Sakurai (OWAADao 1993, 1995, 2005). 

The Way of Washi Tales explains the story of cross-collaborative cultures, how washi and the rich history of the craft informes theater artists' performances, and results in deep personal bonds and experiences. Composed of over two hundred photographs, this fascinating book explores long-term cultural exchange, from bilingual perfomance challenges to the rewards of building a "washi family". Through personal essays, Ibe and Thoron reflect on how a simple natural material, washi, has shaped Japanese culture but also in changing the trajectory of their lives. 

The book will be published by The Legacy Press at the end of February. The Way of Washi Tales describes the process of creating Washi Tales  and discusses the value and impact of ongoing cultural exchange and the complexities of working in two languages and sustaining work over time.
